David Kim ENG 5 Period 5 Essay Both Walt Whitman and Ralph Waldo Emerson were considered great writers in their literature fields. Walt Whitman from “Song of Myself” and Ralph Waldo Emerson in “Nature” and “Self-Reliance” are similar and different in some ways. Their overall purpose in their writing may be the same even if their tone and style are different. They both try to convey a sense of individuality and being unique using different ways to show it. While both believe in being unique and expressing one self, they both show it using different tones of explaining this. Emerson speaks in a critical and warning tone that tells the reader that the human society tries to stop the person from being individualistic and unique. He speaks in a negative tone saying the masses just follow and do not lead their own lives. “The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs.” This quote from Emerson shows that he felt that the society is against self-reliance, but people should be
