David Kim 9/12/10 English Period 5 HW #1 In many books and stories, there is influence from the author’s past, as well as other books and events. The House of Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne was very influenced by not only history itself, but from The Bible as well. 1 Kings 21: 1-29 is a story very similar to those of The House of Seven Gables. These two stories have elements of property being haunted and having the future generations of those who have done wrong being punished. 1 Kings 21: 1-29 is about King Ahab and his yearning for a vineyard next to his castle. He was unable to receive it because the owner of the vineyard, Naboth, said that he would never sell his family’s land to him. Jezebel, King Ahab’s wife, saw that King Ahab was sad and had a devious plan to kill the owner of the property and help her husband take the vineyard. The plan was to blame Naboth of blaspheming GOD and the King, and then stoning him to death. The plan worked out perfectly, and King Ahab took the vineyard to be his. But GOD did not punish Ahab for his sins of murdering and stealing, but instead GOD would punish his son. The House of Seven Gables starts off with the origin of the house of seven gables. In the mid-1600s, a farmer named Matthew Maule creates a house and Colonel Pyncheon wants to get the land. Maule was hanged and killed because Pyncheon created rumors that he was doing witchcraft. But, Maule puts a curse on Colonel Pyncheon and his family for taking his land and his house. Colonel Pyncheon is found dead and his future
