Speaking at the National Press Club, an event the Chinese embassy tried to stop, Ms Kadeer called on Canberra to ignore the pressure from Beijing, which regards the detained Uighur separatists as terrorists. Such a move would mark a reversal of the position taken by the Rudd government when it rejected three requests from the Bush and Obama administrations to settle 17 Uighurs in Australia . Arrested in Afghanistan on suspicion of being al-Qa'ida sympathisers, 22 Muslim Uighurs were sent to Cuba, where they spent seven years in detention until a US court found they posed no threat and ordered their release . Five of the Uighurs have since been resettled in Albania, four in Bermuda and nine in Palau . `` All of the Uighurs in Albania, Bermuda and Palau are living very normal and productive lives -- so we'd be happy if Australia took the four,'' Ms Kadeer said. She praised Australia as a great democracy, thanked the federal government for not kowtowing to Beijing by giving her a visa and expressed a keen wish to meet Kevin Rudd and Foreign Minister Stephen Smith on her next visit. The president of the Washington-based World Uighur Congress accused Beijing of trying to impose its ``authoritarian will'' on democratic countries to discourage them from raising human rights concerns. ``Regarding the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, of course I would be happy to meet with them,'' she said . ``I was given a visa by the Australian government in spite of enormous pressure from the Chinese authorities to prevent that from happening. ``So I hope there will be opportunities in the future to meet with both of them.''
