Biology is only material that is interpreted into gender norms. Manipulation of body instills gender norms. • Gender is created through the production and reproduction of signs and signals to create difference. • Gender = Hierarchy/Norms = Social Managment Stability of gender allows for stability of a traditional means of empowerment/flow of power within a space, a culture, a community. • Gender = Political: Stabilizes a culture and a variety of hierarchical identities: racial, ethnic, religious, class, etc., within a space, a culture, a community.
