With respect to their behaviour in water, classify the following molecules as weak or strong electrolytes and as strong acid, weak acid, strong base, weak base or salt: NaCl strong electrolyte - salt KOH strong electrolyte - strong base H 2 O very weak or non -electrolyte – very weak acid or base (amphoteric = amphiprotic) CH 3 COOH weak electrolyte - weak acid HNO 3 strong electrolyte - strong acid NH 3 weak electrolyte - weak base KI strong electrolyte - salt (comes from reaction of a strong acid with a strong base) NH 4 NO 3 strong electrolyte - salt H 2 CO 3 weak electrolyte - weak acid 2. Assign oxidation numbers to each atom in the following: Na 3 N Na = +1 (always for group 1); therefore N = 3 in order to balance charge. P 4 P = 0 (an element) KMnO 4 K = +1; O = 2 (usual oxidation number for O in a compound, except for peroxides); therefore Mn = +7 {check sum of charges: +1 + 7 + 4( 2) = 0} HClO 4 H = +1; O = 2; therefore Cl = +7 {check sum of charges: +1 + 7 + 4( 2) = 0} HClO H = +1; O = 2; Cl = +1 {check sum of charges: +1 + 1 –2 = 0} P 4 O 10 O = 2; P = +5 {check sum of charges: 4(+ 5 ) + 10( 2) = 0} N 2 O N = +1, O = -2 NO N = +2; O = -2 NO 2 N = +4; O = -2 N 2 O 4 N = +4; O = -2 NO 2 - N = +3; O = -2 (sum of charges: +3 + 2(-2) = -1) NO 3 - N = +5; O = -2 (sum of charges: +5 + 3(-2) = -1)
