Networks What are they? o A communications, data exchange, and resource- sharing system created by linking two or  more  computers and establishing standards, or protocols, so  that they can work together o They are differentiated by: Architecture - peer-to-peer,  client/server Topology - bus, star, ring, hybrid, wireless Protocols -  TCP/IP Media - coaxial, twisted-pair, fiber-optic The bolded items are the topics we will focus on in this lecture

The Internet The Internet is a network o The Internet is a vast network of computers that  connects millions of people all over the world o The Internet is the physical infrastructure upon which  the World Wide Web application runs o The Internet began as an emergency military  communications system operated by the U.S.  Department of Defense in the mid-1960s
