B.    Cloning mammals is difficult. 1.     Not many nuclear transfers are successful; most individuals die before          birth or shortly thereafter. 2.     Those that do survive have many problems with individual organs. C.    The potential benefits of cloning are enormous, despite the ethical controversy. 1.     Replacement cells and organs may help those with incurable degenerative diseases. 2.     Extinct animals might be saved from extinction. 3.     Livestock production can be enhanced.         12.1.    The Hunt for Fame, Fortune, and DNA            A.   Early and Puzzling Clues                   1.   Johann Miescher is credited with the discovery of DNA in the late 1800s.                   2.   In 1928, Fred Griffith was working with S (pathogenic) and R (nonpathogenic) strains                         of a pneumonia-causing bacterium.                   3.   He performed four experiments summarized here.
