Introduction to Psychology Homework #1: Research Methods Use the made-up story about Dr. Chu to answer the questions. Dr. Chu conducted a survey of elementary school children. For this assignment, assume he used a good, representative sample. He asked many questions, but there are two we are interested in. First, he asked how often the child receives praise (never, rarely, sometimes, often, all the time). He also asked the kids about their self-esteem. He used a widely accepted measure of self-esteem, so that is not a problem. He found that there was a strong positive correlation between how often students report receiving praise and their self-esteem. During a radio interview, Dr. Chu said, “My study demonstrates that praising children improves self-esteem.” 1) What does it mean that there is a strong positive correlation between these two variables?

Unformatted text preview: 2) What is wrong with Dr. Chus interpretation of his results? What are the other two possible explanations for these findings? (Hint: Think about A causing B, B causing A, or C causing both A and B) 3) Design an experiment to test the hypothesis that Dr. Chu implied in his statement on the radio. Be very specific--- and be creative! Make sure you: state the hypothesis, operationalize your independent and dependent variables, describe your control group and your experimental group, and explain how you will select your subjects and assign them to groups.
