“Will, I have been looking into this program called NOLS, supposedly it is a fun backpacking adventure program,” said my father over winter break in 2006. Since I had enjoyed other family backpacking trips I decided to check it out. As I flipped through the manual, something caught my eye: the Winder River Wilderness 30-day Expedition. The months leading up to the expedition, I didn’t know what to expect. Even with my brother telling me it would be an awesome trip, I still couldn’t picture what it would be like. Unformatted text preview: th day, I realized that the journey ahead would be a rare voyage that most people would never experience. I thought to myself “I am probably never going to be here ever again in my lifetime, why not enjoy the beauty of the mountains while I can?” I had to take Rachel Carson’s advice that ''One way to open your eyes to unnoticed beauty is to ask yourself, 'What if I have never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?' I did just that, and I am thankful for my decision. I will be able to look back and understand the beauty of the wilderness that I was able to journey through, simply because I asked myself the exact same questions that Carson asks....
