Planetarium: Motions in the Heaven I. Purpose The purpose of this lab is to become familiar with the motions of the planets, stars, and moon. II. Procedure : In the planetarium Professor Reim once again orchestrated the display of celestial objects using a star projector just like he did in the Naked Eye Lab. III. Conclusions and Discussion : The daily motions of the various objects are similar because both the sun and moon rise more or less in the East and set more or less in the West. They are different because the sun takes about 24 hours to complete its average cycle where as the moons cycle takes about 25 hours. The apparent motions depend on the directions in which you are looking because if you face south, they will appear to rise in the East and set in the West. If you face west, they will appear to go below the horizon. The sun seems to move slowly eastward against the background of the star, following a path called the Ecliptic. The moon moves eastward against the background of the stars and returns to the same place after 27 and 1/3 days. The moon follows a path
