AAE 532 – Orbit Mechanics Problem Set 3 Due: 9/15/10 Problem 1: The New Horizons spacecraft is enroute to the dwarf planet Pluto. (When New Horizons launched 1/19/2006, Pluto was still a planet!! In the current trajectory design, New Horizons arrives at Pluto on July 14, 2015. Arrival at Pluto is actually three-dimensional but assume a simplified approach such that the bodies are aligned collinearly and positioned as indicated: Sun — Charon — s/c — Pluto Consider a preliminary model for the encounter. At some instant, the spacecraft is 17,000 km from Pluto. Assume that Charon is in a circular orbit abut Pluto that is approximately 19,600 km in radius. To gain insight, write the expression for the acceleration of the spacecraft relative to Pluto due to the gravity of the Sun and the largest moon Charon. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the dominant term as well as each of the four perturbing terms. What is the magnitude of the total perturbing acceleration? (b) Is the Pluto term actually “dominant”? If you could add only one more body to the model, would it be the Sun or Charon? Why?
