AAE 532 – Orbital Mechanics Problem Set 10 Due: 11/12/10 Problem 1: Assume that you are studying future concepts for space-based infrastructure. You have been asked to provide information on transfer orbits between a space station in a lower orbit and potential space structures (satellites or another space station) in higher orbits. An OTV (Orbit Transfer Vehicle) is expected to provide transportation between the orbital facilities. The OTV is originally in a circular orbit at 1.2 R . Another facility – S.S. Delta – is moving in a coplanar, circular orbit at 3.0 R . (a) Determine the total v Δ and TOF for a Hohmann transfer to deliver the OTV to the space facility. Determine the phase angle that is necessary at departure. How long is it until the geometry repeats? Use STK to plot the three orbits: one rev of the original orbit, transfer arc, final orbit for at least one rev. Introduce the maneuvers with the VNC components. Mark the transfer arc and the appropriate , rv vectors, local horizon, and other pertinent quantities.
