Definitions : 1. The making and using of tools. Humans>> Tool making beings 2. The application of science to the solution of practical problems. 3. A system composed of physical objects and tools, knowledge inventors, operators, repair people, government regulators and others . Technological Determination : Technological development has a life of its own, an internal logic that cannot be controlled by individual humans or even the whole society. Technological Optimism : The view that the effects on human well-being are almost good. Technological Pessimism: Negative view of the effects of technology on human life. Technological Optimism: The Promise of Technology n NAE in Feb 2000, identified 20 greatest engineering achievements that have vastly improved the quality of our lives. n History of America and Europe since the industrial revolution. n India’s technological growth n China’s technological growth is further along the road than India. n Korea and Japan have reach industrialized status. Technological Pessimism: The Perils of Technology Two themes: 1. Technology is associated with a dominating, controlling frame of mind, obsessed with achieving ever greater efficiency, that harms the environment and obscures certain aspects of human experience, and obscures certain aspects of human experience, especially the aesthetic and spiritual aspects. 2. Technology tends to fragment human experience and thus destroy the meaningfulness of much that we do.
