MIAMI UNIVERSITY KNH 188 Study Guide 1 Fall 2009 The video “Quest for Fitness” will be the source of some questions. You already have those questions. The test will also cover the material in chapters 1 & 2 of the textbook and Parts I- VI, of the Primer. Some test questions will come from that material that were not directly mentioned in class. The majority of the test will cover material items listed below. You should be able to provide answers or explanations for each of these items. This list is not inclusive and anything covered or discussed in lecture is “fair game”. There will be at least 2-3 questions from the guest speaker (Thursday 24 Sept) 1. Reasonable estimates of VO 2 max for males and females of “college age”. VO 2 max values for elite endurance level athletes. College male: 40-45 mL/kg/min College female: 30-35 mL/kg/min Male elite endurance level athlete: 75-80 mL/kg/min Female elite endurance level athlete:70 mL/kg/min 2. Estimating caloric expenditure from VO 2 and bodyweight data. Absolute: L/min=total energy capacity Relative: absolute VO 2 /BW 3. Calculations of VO 2 , Q, heart rate, Stroke volume from the Fick equation VO 2 = (HR x SV) (Arterial O 2 –Venous O 2 ) 4. Provide observations or evidence that contribute to and support our current
