Texas A&M University Department of Mechanical Engineering MEEN 260 Measurement and Instrumentation in Mechanical Engineering Fall 2010 Assignment #4 Due Monday October 4, 2010 Problem 1: (10 Points.) In a given experiment the following data were obtained: a. As evident in the data, stress remains more or less constant while strain increases steadily. This phenomenon is known as creep . Perform a linear regression as a function of time . How good is the resulting regression? Use the goodness of fit measures, and to state your re- sponse. b. Strictly speaking, the trend in strain may not actually be linear. An alternative way to charac- terize the relationship between strain and time is perhaps via an exponential or quadratic rela- tionship. Determine which, if any of these types of regression works best in the situation at hand. Time(min.)
