MEEN 315-501 Fall 2010 Problem Set 05 Due: Wednesday October 6, 2010, 13:50 - NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ACCEPTED! SOLUTIONS WILL BE POSTED IMMEDIATELY. Problem 01 R-134a undergoes a polytropic process. The initial and final states of the refrigerant are fixed by p 1 =200 kPa, T 1 = -10°C and p 2 =1000 kPa, T 2 =50°C, respectively. Calculate the work and heat transfer for the process, each in kJ/kg of refrigerant. Problem 02 R134a is compressed with no heat transfer in a piston cylinder assembly from 30 psi, 20°F to 160 psi. The mass of the refrigerant is 0.04 # m . For the refrigerant as the system, W = - 0.56 Btu. Kinetic and potential energy effects are negligible. Determine the final temperature of the water in the tank in °F. Problem 03 A rigid well-insulated tank contains a two-phase mixture consisting of 0.005 ft 3 of saturated liquid water and 1.2 ft 3 of saturated water vapor, initially at 14.7 psi. A paddle wheel stirs the mixture until only saturated vapor remains in the tank. Kinetic and potential energy effects are negligible. For the water,

What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
