Bebeau, PhD University of Minnesota What capacities are required for effective and ethical professional practice? 1. Ethical Sensitivity —the ability to interpret the ethical dimensions of situations that arise in professional practice. 2. Moral Reasoning —the ability to develop well-reasoned arguments for dilemmas that arise in professional practice. 3. Moral Motivation and Commitment —the ability to articulate professional responsibilities and give them priority when they conflict with personal concerns. 4. Moral Character and Competence —the interpersonal and problem solving skills (together with the will and fortitude) to effectively resolve professional problems. Self-assessment : Which of these capacities to you think you have well-developed? How do you know? Which do you think you need to work on? How do you know? What can an ethics programs accomplish? 1.
