80503307 One can reference several examples from the short video The Personals that relate to the study of human development in psychology. Harlow’s findings, specific to contact comfort, are illustrated in the video as well as Langer and Rodin’s findings involving control within human beings. There are also several different stressors reported in the video that can be dealt with using a variety of different coping strategies, referenced in Weiten’s textbook “ Psychology: Themes and Variations .” One example referenced in The Personals that relates to human development is H.F. Harlow’s findings involving contact comfort. Contact comfort is defined as an infant’s “basic need for close contact with something soft and comforting in addition to primary biological needs such as hunger and thirst” (Hock, 2008, p. 128). Contact comfort is referenced in The Personals through several different examples. Deborah explicitly states that she sees older couples walking down the sidewalk and that she misses that companionship, that she “just wants to be held” (The Personals, 1998). This directly correlates to Harlow’s findings with contact comfort and the fact that everyone, even a senior citizen, exhibits a biological need for close contact. Gloria states that she is very lonely and that everybody on Grand Street sees her walking this way and that, yet she is always all alone. This again demonstrates the biological need of a human being for contact comfort. Another example referenced in the video that relates to human development includes the main findings from the Langer and Rodin study. Ellen Langer and Judith Rodin proposed and ran a study that would test the influence of “control” on human behavior. Langer and Rodin performed the test at a Connecticut nursing home where they gave one group of senior citizens the responsibility of deciding how to perform tasks
