ABSTRACT : The objective of this experiment is to study the effect of proportional and proportional integral action of control of air pressure in a tank at specific set point. In the first part, the pressure was controlled by using the proportional controller only the PB% was set to 20,40 and . The offset for each PB % was found and the highest offset was obtained at PB equals 60 % which is14 psig. For the second part, the pressure was controlled using PI controller and the PB% was set to 40 while the integral time was set to 30, 60, 120 seconds. The maximum damping coefficient was obtained at integral time of 30 seconds. In the third part, the integral time was set to 60seconds while the PB% was equal to 20, 40 and 60, respectively. The maximum damping coefficient was obtained at PB% of 40. An inherent disadvantage of proportional-only control is its inability to eliminate the steady-state errors that occur after a set-point change or a sustained load disturbance. In practice, it is more convenient to use a controller that contains integral control action; this mode provides automatic reset. 1

During the 1930s, three-mode controllers with proportional, integral and derivative (PID) feedback control action became commercially available . There are many different ways to manipulate the flows of material into and out of a process, such as the speed of a pump drive. However, a simple and widely used method of accomplishing this result with fluids is to use a control valve, also called an automatic control valve . There are several ways to control the pressure inside the tank at a certain set point. One of these ways is to install a controller that will adjust the pressure if it deviates from its set point.
