Hi Everyone, Discuss both the benefits and dangers of police work. How does popular culture affect the public’s view of police work? Compare and contrast views of the public towards police officers historically and today. How have your own experiences shaped your view? Some of the benefits of police work could be the respect most police officers get from their community, as well as the satisfaction of helping other people, plus a secure future in their job as well as, in some states, pretty good money for their efforts. To be honest, these benefits seem very minimal compared to the dangers that are involved in police work. The second a cop puts on his uniform for the first time; he or she is taking a chance of being killed. As the text states, violent death at the hands of criminal offenders is what police officers and their families fear most (Schmalleger, F. 2010). Other ways that are dangerous when it comes to police work is when one is at a crime scene. There are so many ways the police work can be dangerous. In 2008, 134 police officers were killed in the line of duty. The majority was killed by gunfire (38), then
