BIPN 100, Mammalian Physiology I ANSWER KEY Winter, 2009 2nd. Midterm Exam February 27, 2009 Page 1 1. (14 points). You are working at Geisel library and your boss tells you that you and another co- worker need to move hundreds of books from one shelf to another by the end of the day. You and your co-worker try to carry tall stacks of book so you can get the task done as soon as possible. You have three books in your outstretched hands. Your co-worker keeps adding books. a. Initially, as books are added to the load you carry, your biceps muscles contract more. What receptor and which motor pathways cause the increased contraction? The muscle spindle is stimulated by the stretch of the added load and the sensory neuron synapses with and activates both alpha and gamma motoneurons, causing contraction of the muscle and maintaining the spindles’ response to additional stretch. b. Your co-worker adds one book too many and you drop the load. Explain why. Include the receptor and the pathway that is involved in this response. The Golgi Tendon receptors respond to excessive stretch by a large load and the sensory neuron stimulates inhibitory interneurons that inhibits the alpha motoneurons, inhibiting the contraction. 2. (20 points) . Indicate how parasympathetic and sympathetic systems affect the following. Use for increase, for decrease or NE for no effect. Sympathetic Parasympathetic Pupil size NE Erection of clitoris or penis Heart Rate Glycogen in the liver NE Lipid Breakdown in adipocytes NE Sweating NE Vasoconstriction NE Bronchiole diameter
