RELIGION CHAPTER ONE_ CALLED INTO RELATIONSHIP Monotheism is the belief in one God The explanation or critical interpretation of a passage of sacred Scripture is known as Biblical Exegesis. The Sadducees were a Jewish group that did not believe in life after death. The Essenes are believed to have withdrawn from the world to desert communities to live a monastic lifestyle in preparation for the imminent coming of God. The Pharisees were a Jewish group whose main focus was keeping the Jews faithful to the Law Abraham entered into a covenant with God and was promised descendants and land The Zealots were militant Jewish rebels whose goal was political independence from Rome The scribes were the interpreters and teachers of the Law; most were closely affiliated with the Pharisees. The Dead Sea Scrolls were found in Qumran, a riverbed near the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. A covenant is a scared agreement between God and the People of God; a solemn agreement between two other people or groups of people. To understand the New Testament: - We have to look at who Jesus was and what he said and did - We must accept the religious message - We must understand and appreciate the connection between the Old/New Testament Salvation history is the saving action of God through human history The king of Israel at the time of Jesus’ birth was Herod the Great In Palestine during the time of Jesus, ninety percent of the population belonged to the poor . The teaching example of Jesus often focused on lightening the plight of the poor Preaching the good news to the rich was not primarily the mission of Jesus The Catholic worker movement was founded by Dorothy Day Feast days on the Sabbath were solemn occasions for the Jewish people of Jesus’ time. At the time of Jesus, marriages were arranged as a legal and social contract between two families; romantic love was not a consideration Jewish mother did not have a very close relationship with their sons There were two main economic classes at the time of Jesus: The rich and the poor. Judaism and Christianity are NOT the only two monotheistic religions CHAPTER TWO_CALLED TO FOLLOW JESUS Miracles are signs of wonder that can be attributed to only God Old Testament books of the Bible come from Jewish people before the time of Jesus The Trinity is the religious dogma which professes the belief in the three persons in one God The evangelists are writers of the oral tradition about the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Salvation History is the saving action of God through human history
