Name: Tiffany Bledsoe Course: CWV-101 Date: 04/15/2020 Instructor: Dr. Luke Hoselton Benchmark - Ethical Dilemmas Ethical dilemmas are something that every person will face at least once in their lifetime. How we handle these dilemma's solely relies on our worldview and how firmly we believe and live by it. Each ethical dilemma we face will have some sort of consequence, based upon how we choose to handle it. In this paper, a dilemma about whether or not an abortion should take place to ease the suffering of human life will be analyzed by the Christian worldview perspective, and then compared to an atheistic worldview. Ethical Dilemma Susan is a woman who has tried for many years to become pregnant. After finally getting pregnant, she learns after taking a blood test that her baby will be born with Down Syndrome. Her doctor suggests an abortion. Susan has a successful career and doesn't want to lose that but feels uncomfortable with the idea of having an abortion. Susan seeks advice from an influential professor, Richard, who suggests abortion based on the fact that human beings should increase happiness in the world and decrease suffering. Richard pointed out that living a life with Down Syndrome would mean living a life of suffering for the baby, and being the baby's caretaker would also bring Susan a lifetime of suffering. Richard claims it would be immoral to bring a child into the world knowing it will only suffer, and that the ethical thing to do would be to abort the fetus. The dilemma that Susan faces is the 1
fact that she has tried for years to become a mother and now she must choose whether or not to terminate the pregnancy she's longed for. One option Susan has is having an abortion. If Susan feels that it is morally wrong to bring a child into the world to suffer, she could abort the baby and then, later on, try once again to become pregnant.
