CLCV 224 Lecture Prep #4 (1).pdf - Maciste was a role...

This preview shows page 1 out of 1 page.

Maciste was a role created for the epic Cabiria (1914) that was set in ancient Carthage. The actor who played Maciste, Bartolomeo Pagano, became so popular that he was developed into a spinoff hero in many subsequent films that were set in modern times. Only in the original Cabiria role did he wear blackface. But keep in mind, this was not an American film; it was an Italian film. 1) Read the excerpts from Jacqueline Reich, The Maciste of Italian Silent Cinema in the Workbook , especially pages 57-60 [ Wb 150-153]. Then write a well written paragraph explaining why he seems to have been portrayed in blackface.
