Nov. 22 nd /10 Journal Entry 4 William Byun And I Look Back Am I a problem as well? Do I have the same problems Bartlett is addressing? Many questions wandered around in my head, after reading Robert Bartlett’s “Today’s Students: Souls without Longing.” Well, I am one of today’s students. Perhaps, I have to have a soul without longing which takes up a huge part of students’ problems. Perhaps, it is natural for me to have problems. But it seems that I do not have all the problems Bartlett asserts that many students today have. Nevertheless, I am awed that Bartlett has sharply and somewhat correctly observed his students’ problems dealing with their inner selves; well, he got me. I guess I am not truly passionate about what I am doing in college. But it is not about “absence of longing” but more about presence of longing (p2. line 74). It is not about longing for what I want to do but for what I live for, as a matter of fact. Business is my major in college, a major that now I think is not what I am fit within.
