Unformatted text preview: October 6 Toward the New Atlantis • Copernicus- heliocentric solar system, fit the data better if we put the sun at the center • Tycho Brahe- compromise between Aristotle and Copernicus…sun at center but planets revolve around earth • Kepler-orbits must be ellipses, shows a relationship between the rate and the cut out area • Questions: is there a void in the heavens and if there is why aren’t the planets falling? What holds everything together? • Aristotle- like attracts like, explains objects going back to earth, but now sun is at the center of the universe • Rethink matter because earth is no longer at the base • How is new science going to fit with the orthodoxy of the church • Martin Luther questioning Christianity, wants religion to explain the synthesis of the earth • Council of Trent- Catholic leaders gathered to reform orthodoxy so that people aren’t challenging their beliefs • Ignatius of Loyola- Catholic Orthodoxy needs to be defended- “for the greater glory of God.” Founded a society of Jesuits. Strongly aggressive in removing heresy. Invest in evangelization and education. Saw his own removing heresy....
