HSOC Assignment 3 Notes Museum is divided with biological artifacts on one side and geological artifacts on the other The biological artifacts progress in terms of evolutionary time, while the geological artifacts progress in geological time Moves from simple to complex. What makes something more complex? Armadillo is classified in egg-laying monotreme section Comes after non-carnivorous birds (ducks, gulls, terns, geese) Armadillo- plated mammal (cross between reptilian and mammalian characteristics) Interesting how many more insects there are than mammals Comes before carnivorous mammals Shelf below pouched animals/marsupials Shelf above the sloth Armadillo seems to be evolutionarily quirky Does the platypus come from birds, which lay eggs Next to platypus which has the morphology of a bird Is it possible the armadillo evolved from the platypus and because it had an armored shell, but lacked the carnivorous nature of the later-evolving carnivorous mammals Skeleton is almost rodent like Situated relatively early in evolutionary time Looks prehistoric Should we group by morphology or physiology Comes after insects, reptiles, crustaceans, birds, exoskeleton is almost unique like a reptile but classified with mammals with fur How does something reptile looking group with mammals? Map: Local birds- ungulata, metaferia, marsupiolia, edentata – carnivora
