03:20 Through a Window y Jane Goodall Chapter 2 Lucy – chimpanzee that grew up like human - Goodall describes as like a “changeling” - Was like human child – in negative way - Used ASL Ethological issues with Goodall’s work - Animals weren’t supposed to have minds, were supposed to be animals - Changed pronouns in report from his/her to its - Accused of being anthropomorphic = describe non-human animals with human emotions o How do we know that chimp is “sad”? - Goodall wanted to attach human emotions to chimps, because it was so obvious they felt certain things - Changed when it was discovered that chimps were tool users o “Mike” used stick to knock banana to ground from Goodall - Washoe o Taught Loulis signs o Loulis learned signs he found useful – like “food” - Intellectual skills o Chimpanzees recognize self in mirror o Able to create signs for things they want – “Rock Berry” for nut Chapter 3 - Chimps = more intellectual than baboons - Baboons are much more adaptive - Chimps = cautious and conservative nature, much slower reproductive rate, only found in equatorial forest belt and surrounding areas - Baboons try to steal human food - Crease Story o Got into water taxi to get flour on board - Tangayika – largest body of uncontaminated water anywhere - Flo got mad at baboon for taking eggs Goodall had given to Flo - Flo died – Goodall was very upset Chapter 4 - Nature of early experience may have profound effet on adult behaviour - Disturbed early life may lead to permanent scars

Ch 7:  The Chapter talks about a kidnapping incident that occurred at Gombe. Four  students had been taken hostages. They were sent back with a ransom demand. After a short break Gombe was back in research with more police enforcement.  Satan along with Evered, Jomeo and Sherry had ganged up on their alpha in a  series of dramatic joint display. Figan, lost his alpha position for good and for  nearly nine months there was no clear-cut alpha male at Gombe. This caused  total chaos among the males. After 9 months, Figan once again becomes the  alpha. * Gilka gave birth and her child mysteriously disappeared. In the end they find out  that Passion had killed and eaten Gilka’s infant named Olly. Ch 8. Gilka. Gilka get sick and was paralyzed in one wrist and hand. They diagnosed the  disease and were able to treat the symptoms it with the medicine. She had polio. Gilka becomes pregnant again, to a female
