Topic 11: Competition I. Kinds of species interactions. The sign definition for 2 species gives how they affect the dN/dt (population growth rate) of each other: Effect of Species 2 on Species 1 Effect of Sp 1 on Sp 2 Competition - - Mutualism + + Predation + (predator) - (prey) II. Competition - - by definition A. Mechanisms 1. Exploitative competition = Competition for resources used by both. If Species 1 increases, Species 2 decreases by being affected indirectly via the resources, e.g. food use – individuals of Species 2 don’t get as much food when Species 1 is present. 2. Interference competition = direct interaction (deleterious to both). There are several types of interference: a. immediate physical harm, possibly leading to death: fighting, incidental injury (trampling), even consumption so long as (- -) effects on both species’ dN/dt’s. b. poisoning/chemical. Can involve metabolic products (e.g. waste) and sometimes are part of chemical warfare, whereby specific chemicals evolve that hurt the other species.
