Topic 22: Island Species Diversity and Extinction I. The MacArthur-Wilson Equilibrium Model for species diversity on an island Handout 10 II . Tests of the MacArthur-Wilson Equilibrium Model A. Huge volcano on Krakatoa island erupted in 1883. slide 30-60 m of ash were dumped on the ground. It was recolonized from scratch – the first known colonist was a spider. For birds, MacArthur/Wilson thought equilibrium was reattained in 36 yrs, but now looks like about 100 yrs. Plants were still slower, and today still have not reached equilibrium. The plants showed succession slide , such that the immigration rate increased once a few plants were there. Facilitation ( Topic 21 ). B. Simberloff/Wilson used a pest extermination company to kill off all arthropods on certain red mangrove islands in Florida. slides Convex colonization curve. slide Species continuously arrived and went extinct slide . After S was reattained, the list of species was different from before the extermination.
