Topic 14: Mutualism I. Definition + + II. Two types A. Obligatory Def -- the benefitted species (Sp. A) requires the other species or group of similar species (Sp. B) to maintain itself (Sp. A has a positive or zero dN/dt only in the presence of Sp. B) B. Facultative Def – The benefitted species (Sp. A) can survive without the other (Sp. B), but still a +. One + could be obligatory and the other + could be facultative. This is not always known. III. Mutualism is much less studied than competition or predation, and perhaps it is less common in nature. IV. A very common kind of mutualism, however, is dispersive mutualism Def – animals disperse plant products like pollen or seeds. Two subtypes: pollination and seed dispersal.
