March 8, 2010 Jenny Miller, Relay for Life Project Manager American Cancer Society 9834 California Drive San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 Dear Mrs. Miller: Brightly colored balloons, a kiddie pool filled with tiny goldfish, deliciously decorated cakes lined on a checkered tablecloth. Kids running around, laughing, playing games, and winning prizes. This was the scene on a Saturday afternoon at McKinley Elementary School. These children, who attended school in an underprivileged area, were experiencing the First Annual McKinley School Carnival. As the President of National Charity League of my senior class, it was my job to establish a new charity event with a local elementary school that would continue on in the following years. Instead of merely having our class tutor the children, I thought it would be a great idea to put on an event that would engage the children and excite them; what better way than an all day carnival with games and prizes? My first job as coordinator of this event was to recruit volunteers to work at the carnival. When I explained my idea, the entire class of 15 girls was more than happy to help out. I first needed to speak with the school’s principal to see if the school would even be interested in an event like this. After leaving
