The resulting electric and magnetic fields may couple with electrical/electronic systems to produce damaging current and voltage surges. The fact that an electromagnetic pulse is produced by a nuclear explosion was known since the earliest days of nuclear weapons testing, but the magnitude of the EM P and the significance of its effects were realized very slowly 1 1/11/11 HIGH ALTITUDE EMP Gamma ray pulse emitted by burst propagates radially outward at speed of light. Gammas scatter off air atoms and generate energetic Compton electrons, primarily between 20 to 40km altitude approximately. Crompton electrons are turned by Earths magnetic field.
