University of Phoenix Organization of Police Departments 3 Organization is very important to determine how effective a police department can be no matter the size. Without proper organization a police department’s personnel may not be where they need to be at the critical time. This organization is even more important when the police departments become even larger than my local police department, for instance New York City’s police department. However, even small four man department’s need most of the organization techniques. These techniques include dividing the area or city up into different sections, organizing the time of each officer and staff member and each officer’s special purpose. With proper organization even the largest police department in the world can run smoothly and maximize effectiveness. I will start by describing why organizing the area is important. The area of a police department’s precinct should be divided up into a grid type system and assigned a letter or number that can be referred to by officers and dispatchers. When the area is properly organized this will maximize the amount of time it takes and officer to arrive on
