Police Ethics 3 Ethics, what is ethics? What role do ethics play in policing? Do police have ethical standards? If there is ethics in policing then is their deviance in policing as well? What are some types of deviance and the effects of them? These are all questions that I will try to explain with in this document. Ethics is, (relating to, dealing with, or capable of making the distinction between right and wrong in conduct), yourdictionary.com. This is one definition of ethics. There are many different definitions. However, I feel that ethics must be separated from morals. They are two different things. Morals are personnel beliefs and ethics is how society feels and sets certain standards. As for ethics in policing, ethics are used to set the standard of what the laws state what is right and wrong and how to punish a person for them. So police looks for people whom are breaking these standards and this is how someone gets charged for a crime. As for the officer’s ethical procedures are very straight forward. The officer neither must nor take part in any unlawful actions, including but not limited to drugs, gangs, and obeying
