Analyzing Of the Prison System 3 In this article I will analyze the history and the purpose of the prison system. With this I will include information about the Great Penitentiary Rivalry and how it affects our current prison system. In addition, I will explain how that rivalry continues to shape and influence the way society thinks about the prison system’s purpose. As an added bonus I will describe the difference between public funded and privately funded prison and why this is a debate today. I will start with where the prison system came from. The prison system started off as jails made to hold offenders until they were punished, just like jail today. It came about when Pennsylvania created a wing in the Walnut Street Jail. It was created to hold inmates with the hopes of reforming them with silence and labor. Labor for reducing idleness, because they felt the idleness lead to criminal thinking, and silence for thinking about the crimes they have committed. This was widely accepted due to the fact that it was not beating or executing the offenders. The labor allowed them to give back to society without even leaving their cells. The Walnut Street prison felt that the inmates should not have any contact with other inmates to prevent outside influence on their recover path. The solitary confinement leads to high suicide rates and high numbers of mental disease. The purpose of the prison system at this time was to
