1 ECE 166 – Microwave Circuits and Systems LABORATORY 1 – Week of October 25-30, 2009 Room 4704, EBU-1 TOOLS OF MICROWAVE ENGINEERING This lab will introduce you to the tools of microwave engineering . We will do the following: 1) Learn about different cables and connectors (Standard Coaxial lines, Flexible Coax, Semi-Rigid 0.141, Semi-Rigid 0.085, BNC, SMA, Type-N, Male and Female). 2) Learn about microstrip circuits on different substrates and see the width/impedance, via holes, how they are channelized to reduce coupling, etc. 3) Learn about surface mount components which are suitable for microwave frequencies. 4) Learn about connectorized microwave components such as attenuators, loads, bias-tees, filters,

Unformatted text preview: amplifiers, etc. 5) Learn about Vector Network Analyzers and how we measure S-parameters at microwave frequencies (Reflection Coefficient, Transmission Coefficient). The TAs will show you how to first calibrate the network analyzer with a short, open and load, and then how to measure different components, such as a coaxial line (loss, match), an attenuator, a low pass filter and a bandpass filter (S11, S21, S12, S22). The lab time is 1 hour. Please arrive promptly at your assigned time and immediately give your name to the TA. There will be 11-12 students maximum per lab....
