TOPIC: Person, group of people, an institution, or an idea LENGTH: 5 - 7 minutes OUTLINE: Follow the complete outline format. GRADING: Your outline is worth 25 points. Your speech is worth 100 points. REQUIREMENTS: Incorporate everything you have learned in this course. Produce your greatest effort so far. Show that you have mastered basic fundamentals of speech and can now excel at your mastery. Make this your best, most polished speech. You should praise the subject of your speech and move your audience with emotion. A commemorative speech is a speech in which you pay tribute or honor someone or something. This is not an informative nor a persuasive speech. LANGUAGE: The use of language will play the utmost importance in your speech. Refer to Lucas for his discussion of language. You will be expected to use vivid language, connotative words, and figurative devices. Include the use of metaphors, similes, imagery, alliteration, repetition, allusion, antithesis, definition by negation, parallelism, etc. You are required to use a minimum of 5 different kinds of figures of speech. You may want to consult additional sources for help in writing these devices. Underline and label all figures of speech in your preparation outline. This will be a consideration in your grade. You should inspire! As Lucas suggests, you should penetrate to the very “essences of your subject. ..” you should “express feelings. . .stir sentiments.” I think he described it best when he wrote that a commemorative speech seems “like an impressionist painting—‘a picture with warm colors and texture capturing a mood or a moment’. ..but while the painter works with brush and colors, the commemorative speaker works with language.” A commemorative speech is not a biography of a person’s life. It is also not a persuasive speech. You are to honor and pay tribute to your subject. The audience should be inspired by
