INITIAL SPEECH TIME: 5 - 7 minutes. Violating the time limit may impact your grade. If you do not meet the time limits within 30 seconds either, way, your grade will be lowered one half letter grade. The ability to consistently fall within the time range for your speech demonstrates several skills. These include logical thinking that leads to good organization, analysis of audience, practice, eliminating clutter, and editing appropriately. TOPIC: You will choose a success that you have had in your work or private life, an aspect of your life that you consider a point of pride, or some work problem that you have had and have overcome. For example, you may speak about your decision to attend college, overcoming a fear, your first little league home run, giving birth, climbing a mountain. But whatever you choose, remember, you are speaking about something that you did. You are not teaching us how to do anything. OUTLINE: The outline format follows on the next page. GRADING: This speech is worth 50 points. The preparation outline is worth 25 points. PURPOSE: This assignment gives you an opportunity to succeed in your first public speaking situation. You will get up, express yourself briefly in a well-organized fashion on a topic that you know better than anyone else. You need to concentrate on the organization and delivery of the speech. The following discussion will guide you in this area. All the elements of success exist here for the taking. Show your audience your success. Feeling good about oneÂ’s self seems an important but unexpected benefit of this assignment. I know of no one who would suffer from feeling good about oneÂ’s self. So please help your audience to know something about you and feel good at the same time!
