The Importance of Vegetarianism in Today’s Society The most important way to stay healthy is to have proper nutrition. Our diet often determines the quality of our health and the longevity of our life. Many recent medical studies have revealed that a vegetarian diet is the key to reducing the risk of common diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Although in the past vegetarianism has been seen as strange and eccentric, many organizations including the American Dietetic Association now recognize the diet as healthy and beneficial to the prevention and treatment of many diseases. Health benefits are not the only reason to choose a vegetarian diet. Raising farm animals for food requires an enormous amount of land, food, energy, water, and money. As the need for meat increases, hundreds of forests are being destroyed to make way for farm animals and to grow enough crops to feed them. Eighty percent of the land in the United States is used solely for the purpose of providing our society with meat. And, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, meat production contributes to global warming more than any factories, cars, planes, etc. It is also the main cause of rainforest destruction and water pollution. Vegetarianism could be the answer to many of our problems.
