Lorenzo Kimberly Lorenzo Sociology 100 November 7, 2009 Chapter 8 Essay Education and Religion My comparison of Public and Home school Growing up I went to a public school for socialization and my education, learning from a teacher. My children have been brought up in a home school education and a mix of public education . My oldest daughter has the desire to go to Patrick Henry College and is well aware of the “serious commitments that are asked from their students.”(Witt p163) This college is one that is pushed in the home school community. The hidden curriculum is a hot topic in the public/ home school debate. Public schools work off the teacher being the controller of events and activities and how things need to run in the class room. In the home school environment the children are encouraged to ask questions at anytime and explore the topic until it is fully developed, taking breaks when every the student needs them, not when the teacher needs them. The teacher’s expectancy plays a role in these two school situations because in public you do not know how the teacher is acting toward that child in subtle ways, encouraging or degrading efforts.
