Worksheet: Chapter 8 KEY Distinguish between autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition. Autotrophic means self-feeding, which involves using a non-living energy source to make carbohydrates. Heterotrophic means gaining nutrition by eating other living things. Distinguish between photoautotrophs and chemoautotrophs. Plants are phototrophic, using energy from light to make carbohydrates, whereas chemoautotrophs are prokaryotes that use chemical energy. Describe the structure of chloroplasts and indicate their locations within plant cells. Chloroplasts are membrane-bound organelles in plants that contain stacks of membranes known as thylakoids that enclose a membrane space, known as the thlakoid space. The stroma is the space within the chloroplast bounded by the thylakoids and the inner membrane. Describe where most chloroplasts are located in a leaf. Most are in the mesophyll layer, found in the interior of the leaf. Explain how chloroplast structure relates to its function. Chlorophyll molecules are embedded in the membranes of the thylakoids. Write a summary equation for photosynthesis. 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + light energy = C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Explain the role of redox reactions in photosynthesis. The light-dependent reactions drive the reduction of NADP to NADPH and ADP to ATP, and the splitting of water as a source of electrons and protons, which releases O 2 . In the Calvin cycle, NADPH and ATP are oxidized during the process of carbon fixation. Describe in general the two main stages of photosynthesis. The light-dependent reactions involve electron transport through the membrane bound photosystems I and II. The energy is used to pump H+ through the thylacoid membrane against a concentration gradient, the energy is harvested by diffusion of protons through ATP synthase. NADP is reduced to NADPH during the light-
