November 15 – Lecture 18 Apollo -          Young, beautiful, athletic -          Wealthy (aristocratic) -          Model for the ephebe (young man, 18-20 years old, about to enter military service) o   Sort of a rite of passage -          Bow and lyre -          Harmony, proportion, moderate tension between opposites -          Cult-centre at Delphi o   “Know Yourself” §  Known your limitations o   “Nothing in Excess” §  Moderation is key Prophecy -          Oracle is at Delphi (known as Pythos) -          Priestess (known as Pythia) gave answers to questions of travellers -          Answers were interpreted by male priests -          Apollo is the most prominent prophetic god Leader of the Muses -          With his lyre, Apollo leads the dancing of the Muses Healing and Purification -          Apollo’s arrows à the cause of illness and plague -          He is also called upon in times of sickness à like all other gods, they are the cause but have the ability to cure problems they create -          Healer (Paelon) -          His son, Ascelpius, is the god of medicine
