epicycle, required to match observed motions. Copernicus saw that if we place the Sun at the center of the system, all of the motions are explained in a simple and straightforward way. The problem was, Copernicus' model did not fit the Biblical story. So the theory was repressed, until the Church was finally unable to wield enough power to continue the repression.
