The topic of illegal immigration has been a widely discussed issue in the last several years with an argument for both sides passionately supported by many Americans. Although there is much to be said for people wanting to come to the United States for a better, more prosperous life, it does not justify these immigrants breaking the laws of a country that they are trying to become a part of. Illegal immigrants are not only increasing our present population, they are taking job opportunities away from our citizens, and using resources that our government has implemented without paying taxes. In addition, their unlawful actions have created an upsurge in our prison population, diminishing the room we have for more violent and serious criminal offenders. The U.S. government should do something as soon as possible about the rising number of illegal immigrants currently in the States. The current population of the United States is 303,000,000 citizens. In the March 2006 Population Survey, it was estimated that there are about 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States. It is hard to say for sure whether or not this number is accurate because all these 12 million people are either undocumented or using false aliases. Although 12 million people is a small number compared to our total population, it is still enough to affect our economy, dampen our general health, and upset our population as a whole. Our government is not set up to provide for these 12 million or so people, so does that make the United States the bad guys? Not only do these 12 million or so illegal immigrants affect our population, but also the numerous immigrants here are taking away from our own U.S. citizen’s ability to be employed. The current numbers of U.S. citizen’s that are unemployed is estimated by the U.S. Department of Labor to be about 8.7 million people. And who is taking these jobs away from our citizens? The illegal immigrants that come into this country that people hire to do the “dirty work” or the jobs that no one Leong 2
