Five Basis of Power 3 There are five basis of power used in today’s society. They are: reward power, coercive power, legitimate power, referent power and expert power. The following paragraphs will tie the five basis of power with company A’s scenario. The first basis of power is reward power. Employee 2 illustrates this type of power when he and his accounting manager agreed to allow him to work a four day work week. Employee 2 is the only employee who is allowed to do this. This is solely based on employees 2’s ability to prepare the company’s financial statements. Reward power is based on the perceived ability to give positive consequences or remove negative ones. Because employee 2 is the only one who can prepare the statements he has a positive consequence of his action which allows him leverage to negotiate a four day work week.
