175 Key questions revisited genome was completed, allowing us to compare the exact position of genes on the genetic map with the cor- responding position of the respective coding sequence on the linear DNA sequence. Figure 5-34 makes this comparison for a segment of both maps. Clearly, the genetic map is a close match to the physical map. As an aside in closing, it is interesting that many of the historical experiments revealing circularity of bacter- ial and plasmid genomes coincided with the publication and popularization of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings . Consequently a review of bacterial genetics at that time led off with the following quotation from the trilogy: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to Fnd them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” ABC AB thrtolJ ( toll ) popD gprB dnaant*gprA* KJ rpsT orfileSlspA 012345 chlG* dapB carrimF* mafA kefCfolAapaH orfksgA pdxA brnS* ilvJ rimG ara dadB leuilvmafB* fruR* ftsM* serR* DABC DBCA IH DE ACBD polBmraA,B* ftslmurE murF murG
