Why Scattering Parameters ? A broadband o/c or s/c is difficult to achieve at RF at the component terminals. Active components such as transistors tend to oscillate with purely reactive terminations. At RF total voltages and total currents cannot be measured directly. Scattering parameters are measured with resistive terminations at appropriate reference planes. They are determined by measuring incident and reflected waves.
