These special functionstypically have complicated expressions, but are standard solutions to well known equations. In this tutorial, we examine one family of special functions called the Besselfunctions. The Bessel function of the first kind of order mis defined as: ∑∞=++−=2)2()!(!)1()(kmkkmxkmkxJ. Although the expression is complicated, it can be imagined as the sinusoidal functions of cylindrical coordinates. For instance, wave motions in the cylindrical systems can be described using the Bessel functions. In addition, Matlab has a built-in command for it: BesselJ(m,x).
