Studentsanalyze a range of nonfiction prose selections, deepening their awareness of rhetoric and how languageworks and enrich their vocabulary through reading activities. Through close reading and frequent writing,students develop their ability to work with language and text with a greater awareness of purpose andstrategy. Students write one extended argumentative essay based on research. Because of the demandingcurriculum, sufficient command of mechanical conventions and an ability to read and discuss prose areneeded.LEARNING OUTCOMES:After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1.Compose a focused and cohesive synthesis essay of 1000 words using their previous knowledge ofacademic essay conventions in ENG 100;2.Practice writing as a process through prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing;3.Practice accurate and ethical usage of primary and secondary sources, integrated with students’ ownideas, observations, insights, explanations, and arguments;4.Document sources according to APA conventions;5.Demonstrate grammar competence by writing clear, error-free essays in an academic style;6.Develop their reading skills through MyReadingLab.REQUIRED TEXTBOOK and SUPPLIES:1.MyReadingLabaccount (with the e-book, Read to Succeed, 3rdedition)2.Computer (laptop / notebook), charger, paper, pencils, blue/black ink pens, eraser (You must bring afully charged computer with you to class each day.)Important:Mobile phones are not alternatives to computers and will be allowed only if you have atechnical problem with your computer.
